My Journey with Red Light Therapy

My Journey with Red Light Therapy: How It Transformed My Skin, Health, and Mindset

I’ll be honest — when I first heard about red light therapy, I didn’t think much of it. It sounded like one of those trendy wellness hacks that would fade away after a year. But something caught my attention: the promise of improved skin health, especially for people dealing with psoriasis.

If you’ve ever had psoriasis, you know how frustrating it can be. The itching, flaking, and redness aren’t just uncomfortable — they affect your confidence. I’d tried creams, lotions, and all the so-called “solutions” doctors recommend, but the relief was always temporary. So, I figured, why not give red light therapy a shot?

I’m so glad I did. Here’s how it changed my skin, my health, and my overall wellness routine.

🔴 What is Red Light Therapy, Anyway?

If you’re new to red light therapy, it’s pretty simple. You expose your skin to low-level red and near-infrared light wavelengths. Unlike UV light (which damages your skin), red light penetrates deeply into your tissues, targeting your cells at the mitochondrial level. Think of it like fuel for your cells — it helps them produce more energy (ATP), which speeds up healing, reduces inflammation, and promotes regeneration.

For me, this was a game-changer. Since psoriasis is often linked to inflammation and an overactive immune response, I thought, “If red light therapy can reduce inflammation, maybe it can reduce flare-ups too.”

🧴 How Red Light Therapy Helped My Psoriasis & Skin Health

I started with 10-20 minutes a day in front of the red light. I didn’t expect a miracle, but within a couple of weeks, I noticed something I wasn’t used to seeing — my skin was calmer. The usual redness and itching weren’t as intense. I didn’t feel like I had to reach for my creams as often.

Here’s what I learned about why it works:

Reduces Inflammation: Psoriasis is essentially your immune system going haywire, and red light therapy calms down the inflammatory response. Less inflammation = less redness and swelling.

Speeds Up Skin Repair: Red light helps your body produce more collagen and improves cell turnover, so your skin renews itself faster. This meant the flaky patches I used to see started clearing up much faster.

Balances Immune Function: Red light therapy can balance immune system activity, which is a game-changer if your immune system is in overdrive (like in psoriasis).

I’m not saying it “cured” my psoriasis, but it definitely made a big difference. Fewer flare-ups, less redness, and less itching. For me, that’s a win.

✨ Other Skin Benefits I Noticed

While I initially started red light therapy to help with psoriasis, I quickly realized that it had broader benefits for my skin. Here’s what I’ve seen:

1. Smoother, Softer Skin

• The increased collagen production made my skin feel more supple. It was like my skin had been rehydrated from the inside out.

2. Reduced Fine Lines & Wrinkles

• I wasn’t thinking about anti-aging benefits at first, but after using red light therapy consistently, I noticed the skin on my face looked fresher and tighter. Turns out, red light helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by boosting collagen and elastin production.

3. Even Skin Tone & Reduced Redness

• If you deal with rosacea or blotchy skin, you’ll appreciate this. Red light therapy can reduce the redness caused by irritation or inflammation. I’ve seen a more even skin tone on my face, and the patches that used to be inflamed are way less noticeable.

4. Faster Healing of Cuts, Scars, and Blemishes

• I had a small cut on my hand, and I used the red light on it out of curiosity. It healed faster than I expected. I later learned that red light therapy boosts cellular regeneration, so cuts, scars, and acne blemishes heal faster.

5. Calm, Balanced Skin (No Flare-Ups!)

• For anyone dealing with eczema, psoriasis, or chronic skin conditions, you know how amazing it feels to have your skin stay calm. The fact that I can keep my psoriasis under control with just a few red light sessions a week is a game-changer.

💪 Muscle Recovery & Inflammation Relief

This one was unexpected but so welcome. If you work out, do yoga, or push your body in any way, you know that muscle soreness is part of the process. Well, it turns out red light therapy doesn’t just work on the skin. It also reduces muscle soreness and inflammation.

After intense workouts, I noticed that my recovery time was shorter. I didn’t feel as stiff or sore the next day. The science backs this up — red light therapy increases circulation and blood flow, speeding up the healing process. It also reduces inflammation in joints and soft tissues, so if you deal with achy joints or chronic pain, this can help.

🧠 Mental Clarity, Mood Boost, and Stress Reduction

I was surprised to find that red light therapy also had an impact on my mood and mental clarity.

Here’s why:

More ATP production = more cellular energy, and your brain loves energy.

Cortisol reduction = lower stress levels and less anxiety.

Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system = relaxation.

After a red light session, I feel clear-headed and calm. It’s like the mental fog lifts, and I can think more clearly. If you’ve ever felt “stuck” in your head, I highly recommend this as part of a daily reset.

⚡️ More Energy, Better Sleep

One of the best things about red light therapy is its impact on sleep. If you’ve ever been up at night scrolling on your phone, you know that blue light messes with your melatonin production, making it hard to fall asleep.

Red light does the opposite. It mimics the wavelengths of a sunset, which tells your body it’s time to wind down. By using red light for 15-20 minutes before bed, I found that I fell asleep faster and stayed asleep longer.

🦠 Longevity and Cellular Health

I’m someone who’s into biohacking longevity, and one of the keys to aging well is supporting your mitochondrial health. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of your cells, but as we age, they become less efficient. Red light therapy supports mitochondrial function, allowing your cells to produce energy more efficiently.

This means faster cellular repair and healthier tissues, from your skin to your muscles. It’s one of the reasons red light therapy has become a popular tool for anti-aging and longevity. If I can keep my cells functioning at a higher level, I’m adding quality years to my life.

🔥 My Personal Red Light Routine

If you’re wondering, “When should I do this?” here’s my routine:

Morning (10 minutes): This gives me an energy boost and helps set my circadian rhythm for better sleep later.

Post-Workout (15-20 minutes): I do this to speed up muscle recovery and reduce soreness.

Evening (15 minutes): I use it 30 minutes before bed to help me unwind and sleep better.

If I’m feeling extra stressed, I’ll pair it with breathwork. The combination of breathwork and red light therapy feels like a total nervous system reset.

🚀 So, Is Red Light Therapy Worth It?

If you’d asked me before I tried it, I would have shrugged it off. But now? It’s part of my non-negotiable wellness routine.

I’ve seen how it helps with psoriasis, improves skin texture and tone, boosts mental clarity, speeds up muscle recovery, and supports better sleep. That’s a lot of benefits for something as simple as standing in front of a light.

If you have psoriasis, chronic skin issues, or just want to improve your skin’s texture and glow, I highly recommend it. It’s one of the few things that’s given me consistent, long-term relief.
